They balance the market with perceived consumer need, and they know people will choose a camera with 30 focus points over 20, even if they can make one with 90, so long as it is priced right in the market.Īll in all, I'm just happy that a small bet I made 6 months ago (I'll get a couple of really useful features for free with ML if I buy a 70D and sit tight for the Magic LAntern Port) appear to be coming true. They manage the upgrade cycle, so that your camera will feel old in 5 years because of the year by year increments. Similarly, they're not going to just release some singing and dancing V1.1 firmware that makes the 70D a 7D MkII competitor. They don't advertise or openly condone it though, so that people who want to stay on brand and play it safe will continue to buy Canon intervalerometers, flashes etc, and possibly a higher tier camera when they need more functionality and so protect revenue. The Video stuff is probably a bit more specialist, and they may well leave it out for simplicities sake, the 70D manual already runs over 300 pages - but professionals are still going to buy the full frame cameras anyway but will always want MORE features and settings to get what they want from a camera.Ĭanon I think are happy to let advanced users use Magic LAntern, almost as a tacit feature that they will get more functionality from their camera for the sake of being a bit tech savvy and adventurous. It's pocket calculator stuff, but it's left out of Canons (but not Nikons!) IMO, there's no excuse for a DLSR from the bottom of the range up not to come with a proper intervalerometer built in. Sure, physical features of the sensor or mechanics may well be limiting factors in certain areas: You're not going to unlock more focus points and I'd image that the burst speed is limited by the mirror mechanics, not software, but there is clearly PLENTY of stuff they leave out through conscious choice. I think it's pretty clear that they stack features in a heirachry to clearly differentiate their camera line and also to sell after market products for MOAR PROFIT.
